- Location: Bukit Batu Ridge, Tanjung Uban, Western Pulau Bintan
The rugged interior of Tanjung Uban is a landscape defined by dramatic elevation changes, sharp ridges of exposed red clay, and vast, historical rubber plantations that have stood for nearly a century. This dense, grid-like forest of uniform trees has been transformed by a passionate local community into a world-class network of technical single-track mountain biking trails. These five high-adrenaline routes take you down steep, root-choked descents, across narrow bamboo bridges, and along high ridgelines that offer spectacular, panoramic views of the Riau Strait.
1. The Ironwood Root Descent
This technical single-track run begins at the highest crest of the Bukit Batu Ridge, instantly plunging you into the deep shade of a mature rubber plantation. The trail demands absolute focus and rapid line-selection, as the forest floor is a complex web of thick, raised tree roots that cross the path at sharp angles. Navigating this bumpy terrain requires you to stay loose out of the saddle, using your knees and elbows to absorb the constant impact while your tires fight for grip on the slick, leaf-covered earth. Dropping down this fast, rhythmic root staircase provides an exhilarating test of your bike handling and reaction speed.
2. The Red Clay Berm Challenge
Moving out of the trees, this high-velocity section of the trail tackles a series of steep, natural clay ravines carved out by seasonal rains. The local trail builders have sculpted the hard, vibrant orange clay into a sequence of massive, banked corners (berms) and roller jumps. Dropping into this segment, you will lean your bike hard into the packed dirt walls, using centrifugal force to carry your speed through the tight, undulating S-curves without touching your brakes. The striking contrast between the bright orange track, the green jungle walls, and the high-speed g-force creates a thrilling, cinematic riding experience.
3. The Bamboo Ravine Crossing
This technical obstacle course tests your balance, spatial awareness, and nerve as the trail drops into a deep, misty jungle ravine. To cross the rocky stream bed at the bottom, you must ride across a narrow, fifteen-meter suspension bridge constructed entirely from heavy local bamboo poles lashed together with wire. The bridge sways gently beneath your weight, requiring a smooth, continuous pedal stroke and a fixed gaze on the exit ramp ahead to maintain perfect equilibrium. The combination of the roaring stream below, the creaking bamboo, and the narrow riding platform delivers a powerful rush of adrenaline.
4. The Canopy Switchback Climb
Designed to test your aerobic endurance and technical climbing skills, this grueling uphill segment snakes its way back up the eastern face of the Tanjung Uban ridge. The trail features a series of incredibly tight, steep uphill switchbacks cut directly into the hillside, requiring you to shift your body weight far forward over the handlebars to keep the front wheel planted while maintaining maximum traction on the loose dirt. As you grind your way up through the low-hanging jungle canopy, the loud, rhythmic hum of cicadas and the cool mountain air push you forward, rewarding your physical effort with an intense cardio workout.
5. The Strait Skyline Ridge Finish
The final mountain biking route takes you along the knife-edge summit of the Bukit Batu ridge during the spectacular transition into the evening golden hour. The trail flattens out onto a wide, hard-packed dirt path with the forest dropping away sharply on both sides. Pedaling along this elevated skyline highway, the trees open up completely to reveal a breathtaking panoramic view of the Riau Strait, with the distant silhouettes of cargo ships and traditional fishing boats glowing in the setting sun. Finishing your ride at this high-altitude vantage point provides a peaceful, triumphant conclusion to your journey across Bintan’s rugged interior.
