Sembalun is more than just a gateway to Rinjani; it is a high-altitude playground of ancient volcanic ridges and sharp vertical climbs. These five treks—known to locals as the “Dragon’s Backbone”—offer a raw, high-octane alternative to the main summit trails. Here, the air is thinner, the slopes are steeper, and the views of the lush valley floor below are nothing short of cinematic
1. The Razor’s Edge at Bukit Pergasingan
Rising 1,700 meters above sea level, Pergasingan is the definitive “first step” of the Dragon’s Backbone. The ascent is a brutal, nearly vertical climb through rocky terrain, but the reward is a ridge walk that feels like walking on the spine of a sleeping giant. From the summit, the patchwork of Sembalun’s agricultural fields looks like a giant, colorful chessboard, framed by the towering shadow of Rinjani.
2. The Cloud-Piercer: Paragliding from Bukit Selong
For those who prefer their adventure with a side of adrenaline-fueled flight, Bukit Selong serves as the ultimate launchpad. After a steep trek through the forest, hikers reach a plateau where the winds are perfect for paragliding. Launching from this ridge feels like stepping off the edge of the world, gliding over the valley’s ancient caldera and landing softly amidst the strawberry fields below.
3. The Silent Summit: Astro-Camping on Bukit Nanggi
Bukit Nanggi is the highest of the “sister hills” and offers the most secluded ridge-top experience. Because it is further from the village lights, it acts as a natural observatory. This trek is best done as an overnight expedition; once the sun dips, the lack of light pollution reveals the Milky Way in high definition. It is a place where you can sit on a ridge of volcanic rock and feel as though you are floating in deep space.
4. The Ancient Roast: Foraging the Coffee Trails of Dandaun
Bukit Dandaun offers a trek through time. The trail winds through ancient grazing lands and hidden coffee forests where the trees have grown wild for generations. This is a sensory adventure—hikers can forage wild berries and coffee beans along the ridge, ending the trek at a local “Berugak” (open pavilion) to learn the traditional Sasak method of roasting beans over an open wood fire.
5. The Descent: Downhill Biking the Southern Ridges
For the high-speed adventurer, the southern ridges of Sembalun offer some of the most technical downhill mountain biking trails in Indonesia. The trek up is a test of endurance, carrying gear across narrow basalt paths. The descent, however, is a blur of adrenaline—a high-speed drop through pine forests and tall grass, navigating natural ramps and sharp switchbacks that lead directly back to the heart of the Sasak heritage villages.
