Beyond the famous sunset viewpoint of Bukit Merese lies a collection of secluded coves and quiet cliffs. These are the spots where the wind speaks louder than the crowds, offering the ultimate peace for those willing to walk a little further.
1. The Secret Crescent Cove
Tucked away on the far eastern side of the hill, this crescent-shaped beach is often overlooked. Accessible only by a narrow dirt path, it offers powdery white sand and turquoise water that stays calm throughout the year. It’s the perfect place to sit in total silence, with nothing but the rhythmic sound of the waves.
- Location: Follow the eastern trail from the main Merese peak towards the hidden bay facing the open Indian Ocean.
2. The Ironwood Tree Solitude
There is a lone, weather-beaten tree standing on a cliff edge far from the main parking area. Local legends call it a symbol of resilience. Sitting under its sparse shade provides a panoramic view of the Indian Ocean, making it the best spot for meditation or deep reflection while watching the horizon.
- Location: Located on the southern-most cliff edge, approximately a 15-minute walk from the central sunset point.
3. The Limestone Amphitheater
A natural rock formation that creates a “pocket” of stillness. The high limestone walls block out the sound of the wind, creating an acoustic sanctuary. It’s a favorite for those who want to read a book or write in a journal without any distractions from the outside world.
- Location: Down the rocky stairs near the middle ridge of the hill, tucked between two large limestone formations.
4. The Hidden Tide Pools
At the base of the northern cliffs, low tide reveals crystal-clear natural pools carved into the reef. These “private bathtubs” are surrounded by vibrant moss and small tropical fish. Soaking here feels like being in a natural spa, completely hidden from the sight of hikers above.
- Location: At the bottom of the northern cliff face; only accessible during low tide via the shoreline path from Tanjung Aan.
5. The Shepherd’s Plateau
A flat, grassy area on the highest peak of the Merese range, usually only visited by local buffalo herders. While everyone else gathers at the “Sunset Point,” this plateau offers 360-degree views of both Tanjung Aan and the rolling hills of South Lombok. It’s the ultimate spot to watch the first stars appear in the sky.
- Location: The highest elevation point of the hill range, accessible by following the uphill buffalo tracks toward the west.
